If you’re a serious outdoorsman or outdoorswoman who hasn’t heard of KUIU, it’s likely you’ve been too busy to pay much attention to the high-end clothing and gear market the last several years. To be sure, KUIU is a major player in the performance hunting gear and clothing market, building products to excel even in the most demanding hunting conditions.
KUIU: In The Beginning
Most Hook & Barrel readers are probably aware that many professional athletes are also avid hunters, anglers, and all-around outdoorsmen. The outdoors often provides a respite of sorts from the constant toil of practice, conditioning, and performing at the highest level of athletics.
NFL linebacker Jason Hairston was one of those avid outdoorsmen. A lifetime outdoorsman introduced to hunting by his father at a young age, Hairston was able to put more time into hunting and the outdoors after he retired from pro football in 1996. After years of backcountry hunting, Jason learned what gear worked and what gear didn’t.

With a vision of pushing the boundaries of performance, the concept of ultra-lightweight, and technology development, Hairston launched KUIU in 2011. And the rest, as they say, is history
In the early days, Jason did it all himself, from sourcing fabrics to sketching new gear concepts to writing blog posts. “I’ve never worked so hard in my life,” he said, “and I’ve never felt so driven.” That raw commitment to the craft, the process, and the community is what gave KUIU its DNA.
KUIU: Moving Forward
Hairston passed away in 2018, but the company he founded was well on its way to becoming a phenomenal success. He’d set out to change the way serious hunters prepare for the backcountry, and succeeded in that quest. KUIU continues to build what others don’t: a system of ultralight, high-performance hunting gear with no compromises.

At the core of KUIU is a simple but radical idea. If you strip away the compromises (middlemen and watered-down designs) you can build gear that truly performs. That’s why Hairston used a direct-to-consumer business model from day one. It was about honesty and control.
The result is a system of clothing, packs, and accessories built not for the shelf, but for the field. KUIU’s fabrics aren’t off-the-rack; they were developed in partnership with elite textile engineers, like Toray Industries in Japan, to create materials that balanced weather protection with breathability and weight savings. Each piece of gear has been tested in extreme environments by hunters who didn’t care about fashion, only function.

This mindset pushed the company to launch one breakthrough after another: carbon-fiber frame packs that haul meat without buckling, windproof shells that breathe like fleece, base layers that dry faster than anything on the market, and more. Each product had to survive the field and earn its place in the system before being offered to KUIU’s customers, who are, in fact, a special breed.
Creating A Community and Giving Back

KUIU Nation is a phenomenon that arose from the company’s efforts to listen to customers, learn what they needed and produce the products that gave those customers the best outdoors experience possible. What began with a blog and a vision gradually became something larger than anyone imagined: a global tribe of hunters committed to the same values of preparation, precision, and passion for wild places.
Referred to by the company as KUIU Nation, it’s a network of sheep hunters, elk addicts, first-timers, and seasoned guides — men and women who understand that success doesn’t come easy, and that the right gear can make or break the hunt of a lifetime.

KUIU doesn’t want to build for them, KUIU wants to build with them. That’s why the company still shares deep-dive product breakdowns, behind-the-scenes tests, and raw, unfiltered hunting stories with their loyal customers. At the end of the day, they’re not selling dreams; they’re making the gear that helps KUIU Nation chase their dreams!
Along the way, KUIU has remained committed to giving back and supporting those who selflessly choose to serve this great country and our communities. Recognizing the sacrifices these individuals make day in and out, KUIU is honored to be partnered with eight different organizations that support our military and first responders.
KUIU: Today And In The Future
The same fire that started KUIU still drives everything the company does. KUIU has expanded into new gear systems, refined every stitch, and invested in global sourcing, conservation partnerships, and technical innovation. And they’ve done it all without letting go of their founding obsession to engineer the world’s most innovative performance hunting gear.
But don’t think all of this is done simply for a profit. KUIU’s Conservation Direct program is a first-of-its-kind conservation initiative. Entirely company- and customer-funded, every dollar invested goes toward a tangible conservation project that contributors and volunteers can see. In partnership with local agencies, the program has funded 10 wild sheep translocations.

While grounded in the past, KUIU’s future is also forged in the hunting trips yet to be taken. The company is scaling up its research and development, launching performance-tested systems for new terrain types, and continuing to lead the industry in direct-to-hunter innovation.
KUIU isn’t chasing trends. Instead, the company is chasing performance with the same obsession that started the brand nearly 15 years ago: to make gear that doesn’t just meet expectations but surpasses them every time. At KUIU, the mission is, indeed, bigger than the clothing. It’s about empowering hunters to go further, hunt harder and return with stories that last a lifetime.

Ultimately, both KUIU’s mission and its products are unique in the outdoor industry. And serious outdoorsmen and women have embraced the company wholeheartedly.
