Mike Herne

Freelance Outdoor Writer/Community Marketing Manager

Mike Herne is a retired U.S. Army Airborne Ranger with 20 years of service. He hunts the Rocky Mountain West, where he's found more success than failure chasing elk through Colorado OTC units with a bow. When September ends, he turns his attention to coyotes. When the predator calling slows, he finds a river and a fly rod. He believes in hard miles, quality gear, and a hunting community forged in shared suffering.

What the outdoors mean to Mike:

Twenty years of military service taught me one thing about the outdoors: it's the only place where life gets honest. The noise of civilization, the manufactured urgency of deadlines and obligations, all of it drops away the moment you're deep enough into the mountains that comfort is no longer guaranteed. Out there, the problems are real. Food, water, shelter, survival. You stop managing life and start actually living it. We weren't built for comfort. We were built to work for something that matters. Every spring and every September, when I step back into the high country, I get a taste of that. It's not an escape from life. It's a return to it.
