The newly launched Echelon 4.0FC COA is the latest iteration of the frankly phenomenal line of Echelon handguns from Springfield Armory.
Featuring a hybrid 4-inch barrel paired with a full-sized frame, the Echelon 4.0FC COA offers optimized ergonomics, an eminently packable chassis, and plenty of onboard firepower.
This gun is a serious fighting pistol designed for comfortable everyday carry.

Springfield Armory’s first Echelon 9mm was hardly the world’s first polymer-frame, striker-fired combat handgun when it hit the market in July 2023. That honor goes to the simply ghastly disco-vintage HK VP70.
However, the Echelon is honestly about perfect. Everything that can be tweaked to make this the ideal personal defense tool has been tweaked.
The end result is modular, flexible, and effective.

Echelon 4.0FC COA Sight Solutions
What defines the Springfield Echelon 4.0 FC COA is its integrated optics solution. This version of the Echelon is cut at the factory to accept the Aimpoint COA fully enclosed red dot sight.
The COA mounts via Aimpoint’s proprietary A-CUT system. The A-CUT buries the sight in the slide for a low-profile optic that co-witnesses the dot with the host gun’s iron sights.
Like everything else in the universe, it’s really all about physics.
The Aimpoint COA only weighs 1.7 ounces. That’s about the same as a standard golf ball. However, a semiautomatic pistol slide cycles in about 55 milliseconds.
That equates to a speed of 3.1 meters per second. In such a compact system, it is blisteringly fast. These sorts of dynamics produce some serious shear forces.
Typically, these forces are shouldered by a sight’s mounting screws. However, over time, that shear strain can take a toll on those tiny fasteners.
Little is more embarrassing than having your optical sight fall off in the middle of a gunfight.
The Aimpoint solution is the A-CUT. By incorporating a robust front hook and rear locking wedge, Aimpoint ensures that all those prodigious recoil forces are transmitted directly into the slide rather than through the mounting fasteners.

In this case, the screws serve solely to hold everything together rather than shoulder all of that mechanical chaos.
As it is also cut deeply into the host slide, the A-CUT keeps the optic low on the gun for minimal parallax and a perfect co-witness.

What Makes The Echelon 4.0FC COA So Modular?
The beating heart of the Echelon 4.0FC COA is the COG or Central Operating Group.
This removable fire control group is the serialized bit that must transfer through an FFL dealer. By mixing and matching slides and frames, that one COG can become many different guns.
The Echelon 4.0FC COA is the archetypal tactical compromise. In the case of the Echelon 4.0FC COA, that means a full-sized frame and mid-sized slide.
The generous grip offers plenty of real estate to grab along with a prodigious magazine capacity.

The gun comes standard from the factory with one 17-round magazine and a spare that packs 20 rounds onboard.
The Echelon features Springfield Armory’s Adaptive Grip Texture. This carefully curated surface feels smooth when handled lightly, but becomes more aggressive the tighter you squeeze.
This makes for a secure grip that doesn’t abrade you unduly after protracted range sessions.
The gun also comes with three interchangeable backstraps that can be used to optimize the gun for your hand size.
The Echelon 4.0FC COA sports a slightly-abbreviated 4-inch barrel and correspondingly truncated slide. This makes for comfortable concealed carry and rapid presentation.
However, this barrel length also provides proper velocities and superb accuracy.
The slightly diminished sight radius doesn’t matter as the gun comes with this superb Aimpoint red dot optic.

Shooter-Friendly Echelon 4.0FC COA Features
No kidding, everything else about the Echelon is just perfect.
There are little parking pads for your trigger finger on both sides of the gun to give you a spot upon which to rest when you are not actively engaging the threat.
The striker-fired trigger is superb with trivial take-up and a nice sharp break. The reset is abbreviated for those among us who like running our weapons fast.
There is the obligatory trigger blade safety in addition to a mechanical firing pin block and a second sear built into the COG for ultimate security.
You can also disassemble the mechanism without pulling the trigger, which is a real plus.
The slide and barrel are Melonite-finished, and the dust cover will naturally accept standard accessories.

The Aimpoint COA Red Dot Sets This Gun Apart
The COA is an enclosed emitter sight. That means it is all but indestructible and won’t collect pocket lint like the open sort might.
The 3.5-MOA dot is the perfect size for rapid target engagement on a combat pistol.
The sight will run constantly for five years on a single CR2032 button cell battery. The battery can be replaced without dismounting the sight or disturbing its zero.
The chassis is cut from 7075-T6 aluminum, and the front lens is hardened against rough handling and abuse.
Windage and elevation are both click-adjustable with an included tool, and the thing thrives underwater down to 25 meters.
Intensity buttons are easy to use even with gloves, and there are NVG settings if you are into such things.
The COA offers a trim chassis with a generous field of view.
Carrying The Echelon 4.0FC COA
Selecting a concealed carry gun is a Gordian chore. It’s a buyer’s market these days.
Tiny little micro revolvers will get lost in the front pocket of your jeans, and might serve simply to enrage a potential attacker. Ultra-high-capacity race guns are like trying to hide a hubcap in your pants.

The Echelon 4.0FC COA is small enough to carry while remaining sufficiently ample as to offer a controllable tactical package. With 17+1 of 9mm Para on tap, it will manage most any conceivable tactical problem.
There are no ancillary ditzels to snag on stuff, so presentation is both fast and smooth. The Aimpoint COA works just as advertised, offering superb situational awareness and rapid target acquisition.
The Echelon 4.0FC COA feels great and shoots even greater. Pay attention to what you are doing, and it is no great chore to keep your rounds inside a shirt pocket out past reasonable handgun ranges.
The ergonomics are as good as humanity can make them. That means the gun runs fast if need be. However, with all that ammo onboard, you really shouldn’t be having to do many tactical magazine changes.
If your problems demand more than 18 jacketed hollowpoints to resolve, you might want to rethink your life.

Final Thoughts
Lots of folks make optics-ready polymer-frame combat handguns these days. Features, quality, and price points range from superlative to rubbish, with everything in between.
I live in this space, and the Springfield Armory Echelon is the nicest production tactical pistol I have yet experienced.
Limitlessly customizable and offering unimpeachable quality right out of the box, the Echelon 4.0 FC COA now also includes the genre-defining COA optical sight.
When Springfield Armory and Aimpoint get in the same room together, expect beautiful things to result.
This pistol is fun to shoot, easy to carry, and tough enough to keep you alive and secure in some of the world’s nastiest places.
This is indeed the elusive effective tactical compromise.
