Smith & Wesson keeps pushing the M&P line forward, and the new M&P 9 M2.0 Metal HD and Competitor HD pistols that have dropped show two different ways to get there. One leans hard into durability and shootability. The other is built for the kind of speed measured in fractions of seconds. Both are unapologetically metal, full-size, and built to withstand heavy use. Which one is perfect for you?

New S&W M&P M2.0 Metal HD

S&W’s new M&P 9 M2.0 Metal HD is designed to be a total workhorse, featuring a rugged,  all-stainless steel frame. This engineering adds some extra recoil-soaking heft that helps tame muzzle flip. When paired with a 5-inch barrel, you get a pistol engineered to feel solid in the hand and settle fast between shots.

The frame texture is grippy without chewing up your hands, and it stays put even when sweat gets involved.  It also features a crisp, flat-face trigger with a clean, predictable press.

Night Fision tritium sights are bright and easy to pick up, and the slide is C.O.R.E. optic ready if you want to throw a dot on top. Overall, it’s a pistol that makes sense whether you’re burning ammo at the range, setting it up for duty use, or dabbling in competition.

The Competitor HD takes a different approach. This one is built for shooting when the timer and reload speed matter in fractions of seconds.

The spiral-fluted barrel and lightened slide help the gun cycle quicker and stay flatter in recoil. Deeper, more aggressive slide serrations make press checks and slide work easy, even when you’re under pressure and moving fast.

S&W also added competition-friendly touches like an external magwell and extended magazine release to make reloads faster and more forgiving, especially when the clock is running.

The stainless steel frame still provides that solid, balanced feel, while the HiViz tritium and fiber-optic front sight jumps out in almost every light condition. Like the Metal HD, the Competitor HD is optic-ready and built on the proven M&P M2.0 platform.

Both pistols are offered with or without a thumb safety, along with 10-round compliant options. Whether you want a rugged, versatile workhorse or a purpose-built competition gun, Smith & Wesson has made it clear that they are far from done with the M&P line.
