The new SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW from Springfield Armory mashes perfect Stoner-inspired ergonomics into a 9mm handgun chassis that packs scads of onboard ammo.
The gun transfers as a pistol and runs like a gerbil on crack. We really shouldn’t care much about how cool our guns look, but this one looks freaking awesome.
The SB Tactical HBPDW pistol stabilizing brace keeps things handy and compact. The gun’s Springfield Armory parentage ensures superlative quality and optimized everything. The Springfield Armory SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW fills a curious tactical niche.

A PDW Is a Good Friend to Have When You're on Your Own
My friends tell me I'm the luckiest man alive. That’s not necessarily hyperbole. I am blessed with a wife who loves me, three of the world’s most awesome kids, and a job that pays me to shoot guns and then claim it as work for the IRS. That seems pretty lucky to me.
In the second of five careers back in the 1990s, I was an Army aviator. It’s pretty expensive to train you to fly a particular helicopter, so the Army usually puts you in one and leaves you there.
I was fortunate enough to fly four. Aeroscouts, heavy lift, air assault, and guns, I got to taste it all.
By definition, Army aviators operate behind enemy lines. Your mission is to project power deep in the enemy rear areas whether that is reconnaissance, troop insertion, artillery raids or fire support.
That means if you go down on a mission, for a while at least, you’ll most likely be on your own.

When Things Go South, You Need a Gun That's Up to the Challenge
There is an axiom in Army aviation that you will leave a flaming aircraft with whatever is strapped to your body and nothing else. As a result, we carried everything we needed to survive in hostile territory—a radio, a signal mirror, a first aid kit, a little fishing gear, some flares, a handgun, and a few incidentals—in a handy comfortable vest we wore all the time.
However, if ever we needed to actually make our way through the badlands, that Beretta M9 seemed marginal at best.
The solution was the PDW. PDW stands for Personal Defense Weapon. The traditional military PDW is a selective-fire submachinegun that is compact, handy, and packable.

Think FN P90, Mini Uzi, MAC10, or Czech Vz61 Skorpion. The HK MP5K PDW in particular was custom-designed for that mission.
Trying to talk Uncle Sam into buying us a bunch of those was a bit of a crusade for me back in the day. Even at a grand a pop, you could outfit every Army aircrewman on active duty with a proper PDW for the cost of two Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Alas, nobody cares what a lowly Army captain thinks. However, I still believe it was a pretty great idea.

I served with a guy who was shot down in Mogadishu and had to use his handgun for real. He told me it wasn’t much like the movies.
If you are on foot and evading in a ghastly place like that, the personal weapon that was such a pain to lug around suddenly becomes the most important physical object in your universe. It therefore behooves us to do that up right.
Springfield Armory has contrived the perfect solution in the SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW.
The 32-round AR-Style Magazine Means There's Plenty of Lead for All the Bad Guys
The SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW begins with a standard Stoner-inspired AR chassis. However, this rifle-centric platform is then shrunken down to be as small as physics will allow.
The 5.5-inch chrome moly vanadium steel tube is Melonite-finished and rifled 1-in-10. It is also threaded 1/2x28 for a sound suppressor if desired.

However, the gun comes from the factory with the neatest Springfield Armory Muzzle Drum that projects the noise and blast forward and away from the shooter.
The SB Tactical HBPDW pistol brace telescopes around the receiver. When combined with its proprietary short buffer system, this keeps the overall package absolutely tiny.
The forged receiver set will outlast your great grandkids, while the nickel boron-coated flat trigger is crisp, reliable, accurate, and fun. The 45-degree safety is bilateral as is the QD sling mount plate in the back.
The gun feeds from a 32-round AR-style box magazine and is finished out in a cool tungsten gray high-temperature Cerakote.
There is plenty of rail space up top for tactical glass, and the stubby little forend sports both M-LOK slots and a hand stop to keep your sensitive digits away from the angry spaces.
The SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW runs like any other AR you have ever hefted only smaller, lighter, and handier. The B5 Systems pistol grip is nicely textured and features a sharp angle to help keep your strong-side elbow tucked in tight as it should be.

Trigger Time with the SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW
The SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW is blowback-operated. That means the mass of the bolt and recoil spring assembly is balanced to counteract the recoil impulse of standard 9mm ammunition.
However, unlike most blowback 9mm platforms, the SAINT Victor was surprisingly placid on the range.
I ran this gun with everything from 100-grain Black Hills HoneyBadger rounds up through heavy subsonic 147-grain jacketed hollowpoints and found it to be completely reliable. No great shock there. It is, after all, still a Springfield Armory product.

This big-boned handgun is both larger and heavier than your typical polymer-framed pocket pistol. However, the Victor PDW carries 32+1 onboard and offers a great deal better accuracy potential than might be the case with a typical Glock.
The AR-inspired layout combined with the SB Tactical pistol brace lends itself to optical sights, accessories, and stability on the range.
A Great Gun Needs a Great Optic
I outfitted the SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW with a Streamlight TLR-8G combination white light and green laser.
This rig isn’t much larger than my thumb yet nicely displaces the darkness. Additionally, the laser sight adds no significant mass or weight. It is handy if you need it.
This solar-powered Holosun 510C optic is a personal fave. The onboard sensor automatically adjusts for ambient illumination, and the combination of a conventional battery and a solar cell means you don’t have to think about it much.

The Shake Awake feature lets you just grab the gun and go. If ever you find yourself fighting for your life, you really don’t want to have to be messing around with your gun sight.
The SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW runs fast and shoots straight.
The gun is small enough to fit into a book bag yet still remains markedly more accurate and controllable than a conventional combat pistol. Even moving quickly, this nifty rascal keeps groups shockingly tight.
The SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW Keeps You Safe in a World Gone Just a Little Bit Nuts
It’s a buyer’s market for defensive firepower in America these days. Rifles, pistols, SBRs, and everything in between clutter up your local firearms emporium. However, the SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW occupies a unique niche.
Like the traditional PDW for aircrews, this gun strikes a lovely balance between firepower and portability.

The SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW is superb company on peaceful walks around my rural farm. It is also great medicine for those times the dog won’t shut up in the middle of the night.
Effective, reliable, good-looking, and cool, the SAINT Victor 5.5-inch PDW will keep you and yours safe in a world gone just a little bit nuts.
